Paying Down Credit Card Debt

Credit Card Payments

Recently, there have been companies that have been started and developed that have the sole purpose of helping people reduce or eliminate their credit card debts. With increasing regulations that are being placed on credit card companies, these lending companies are becoming much more cooperative and working to offer as much assistance as possible to consumers.

Most of this assistance is coming in the form of online programs and sites that offer help to consumers ridden with credit card debt. Many people ask themselves if this is really helpful at all and what benefits they'll have from using these services.

It's documented that the average American household carries between $8,000 and $10,000 in debt from credit cards. These companies, most of which have been created by the credit card companies themselves, have been designed to help consumers out. They offer big promises of helping you manage debt, have better communication with your credit card companies, and also get you put in touch with well known, highly trained credit counselors that can help consumers develop a budget and help with financial management skills.

President Barack Obama recently enacted regulations and enforcements that are set to be put into effect by July of 2010. These regulations are being implemented by the Federal Reserve. The credit card companies are trying to work with as many consumers as they possibly can and get as much of their money paid back before they have to start following these tighter rules and regulations.

Many critics that have said that these new regulations and rules are nothing more than a public relations ploy. However, despite these claims, many of the companies that are available online for reducing debt give you phone numbers that you can contact anytime when you are in trouble with your credit card debt. These phone numbers give you access to the people that you need to talk at the offices for your particular card. If you are having trouble paying your debt, these numbers can be a lifesaver for you. This is a huge step forward for credit card companies and a very smart move. They are essentially making it possible for consumers to be able to negotiate their debt and come to an agreement of payment terms that they can live with.

In the past, the credit card companies didn't care about whether consumers had the means to pay or not. They would simply send the debt to collections and would write it off. This would create a negative credit score and could also cause many other problems for the consumers. Another feature of these sites is that they give you access to a debt calculator and give you honest, complete information about credit card terms and rates. This information empowers you to make smart choices and know exactly what is involved with your credit cards.

If you don't want to utilize these online sites, you can still be informed and do everything in your power to lower your rates and pay down your cards. All you have to do is stop using your card, don't go over your credit limit, make your payments on time and pay more than the minimum payment due, if possible. Call the card issuer and ask them to lower your interest rates and avoid racking up costly fees like late fees and over the limit fees.

In situations like this, chances are you won't not benefit from transferring balances if there are more fees or if the fees are higher for the card that you are transferring to.
