Credit Card Debt Regulations

Credit Card Debt Regulations You Should Know

There are some big changes that are coming into effect for credit card companies. These changes are great for consumers. They are getting more freedom and having to deal less with the unlawful practices of the credit card companies. They are getting more freedom and not having to worry so much about constant changes and unknown increases in rates and fees. They are getting more clear ideas of what to expect and what they are responsible for. There are no longer changes being made for no good reason. Consumers do not have to worry about their rates and fees being changed on a day to day basis. They know what they are paying and they know that the fees and charges will not be increased or modified without a very good reason and without their knowledge and understanding.

Credit card companies forced to make changes that may benefit consumers

There is increasing pressure on the credit card companies and on the laws and regulations that they are required to follow. The ploys and cons have been going on for a long time. Finally those in office and in Washington have taken notice of what is going on and started doing something about it. Credit card companies have been getting away with their unfair practices for far too long. It is way past time for changes to be made. The House of Representatives has recently passed legislature known as the Credit Cardholders Bill of Rights. The bill creates standards that will eliminate some of the most exploitative practices currently being used in the credit card business. It stops credit card companies from being able to raise interest rates on balances that already exist except for in certain circumstances. The only way that they will be able to increase rates is with balances that are at least 30 days past due. There will no longer be rate increases that are done anytime, for any reason, or no reason whatsoever. By these new laws, credit card companies will be required to give their customers a 45 day notice of any proposed rate increases. The companies will also only be able to figure interest on balances that are in the current billing cycle. Statements will be required to be mailed to consumers earlier in the billing cycle. Fees for over limit transactions will not be allowed anymore except for when the cardholder agrees to this beforehand.

Proposed credit card law changes could have some negative affects

The downside to these new laws is the fact that it will take almost a year for them to be put into place. It is as if Congress is saying that these actions are unlawful, but are then allowing the credit card companies to continue practicing them for a year. There are many Americans that simply cannot wait for a year for fairness to begin to be shown. This means that they will have continued struggles and family failure in the long run. Until the laws are put into place many Americans will continue to struggle and will have ever increasing problems. Some will get so far in debt with the fees and charges that the credit card companies are using to their advantage right now that they will face bankruptcy, lower credit scores, and many other problems. It is a vicious cycle and until it is broken, many Americans do not have a lot of hope.
